The Graduates!

Tonight those seniors walking this weekend at Graduation were honored by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at the Senior Recognition Ceremony. Women's soccer was represented by Kasie Rozario, Jenna Kasch, and Marti Teunissen. Kasie was a four-year member of the Warriors. She is graduating with a degree in Child Development with a minor in Psychology. Jenna Kasch has played two seasons for the Warriors after transfering from UC Davis. She graduates with a degree in Psychology. She will enter graduate school next fall and has one more year of eligibility. Marti completed her playing career in the fall of 2006. She spent this past season as an assistant coach for the Warriors. She is receiving her degree in Business.

SAAC presented each senior with a blanket and a student-athlete sash. As is tradition on the women's soccer team Marti and Kasie also received their jerseys. Jenna of course didn't get hers because she needs it next fall.

And The Winners Are...

The entire women's soccer team was the big winner at the Cal State Stanislaus Athletics Banquet Presented by Outback Steakhouse. After a great dinner of steak, chicken, rolls, salad and mushrooms the women's soccer was awarded the 2007/08 Team Academic Award for posting the highest team GPA in the athletic department. The Warriors posted a team GPA of 3.38.

The women's soccer team also handed out individual awards as voted on by the team. The Rookie of the Year Award was a tie. Jenna Kasch presented the two awards in place of last year's winner Bri McClain (who is in Florida at an NCAA student-athlete leadership seminar) to Kaity Bojorquez and Adrienne Sorenson. As a freshman Kaity was a starting defender on the team last year at both center back and outside back. She played the most minutes of any player on the team. Adrienne Sorenson, a JC transfer from Sierra College, was 2nd on the team in goals, 3rd on the team in assists, and 2nd on the team in total points.

The Most Inspirational Player award was won by senior Petra Schaaf. Petra was not able to attend due to a final exam and the award was accepted on her behalf by last year's winner Kim DiNardo. Petra was a four-year member of the Warriors, an outstanding defender as well as fantastic student-athlete. She was known to everyone for always putting her team first!

The voting for Most Valuable Player also ended up in a tie. Melissa Phillips, a junior defender and two-time All CCAA conference player was one of the winners. Not only was she the heart of the defense but Mel also scored three goals and had an assist from her defensive position. Cherie Early, a senior forward, was the other winner. Cherie completes her career at Cal State Stanislaus 5th in goals, 2nd in assists, and second in points. She is a three-time All CCAA conference player.

It was a great night for the entire athletic department! GO WARRIORS!

After a few weather delays and some construction delays it looks like the Student Recreation Complex is back on track. Below are pictures of the complex including the 20,000 square foot Student Recreation Center, the soccer practice field (which will be bermuda grass and nearly completely flat with only a 1% slope), the track, the stadium, and even the locker rooms. Keep checking the women's soccer blog for more updates throughout the summer.

These Alumni Are VERY Good!

Old age has not caught up one bit with the Warrior alumni. They battled very hard on the field for 80 minutes creating multiple opportunities in a 1-0 loss to their younger opponents. The Warriors didn't score until there was seven minutes remaining in the game when Jessica Cordova hit a great through ball to Lisa Garcia who slipped it past legendary alumni goalkeeper Bre Vaughan. Despite the loss alumni greats Erin Taylor, Cherie Early and Vaughan still agreed to host a pizza and potluck for both teams. It was another great alumni game and there is no doubt the old ladies are plotting their revenge for 2009 when the alumni game will hopefully be held in the new stadium under the lights!
