Home Sweet Home

We finally arrived back in Turlock about 45 minutes ago. It sure was an eventful day. Here is a recap. The morning started at 8:30 a.m. with a team meeting to review our tactics for the game. Then we had a great breakfast at the hotel which included waffles, eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, cereal, OJ, water etc....At 9:45 a.m. we boarded the bus for Cal State San Marcos. It was off to the training room and the locker room to change for the game.

The match ended in a 0-0 tie after 2 overtimes. It was pretty intense. Click here for game story.

After the game it was off to the showers and then on the bus again to grab a quick bite at Chipotle and then back home. Our bus driver Janet (pictured) is amazing!

Well that's it for now. Goodnight from THE LOCK!

GOOOOOAAALLLLLLLSSSS!

It didn't take long for the Warriors to make an impression. In the first match of the year the Warriors posted 9 goals on Division II opponent from the GNAC Northwest Nararene University. The 9 goal performance was a team record for a single match. The previous record was 5 goals which has happened 6 times. Stay tuned for a video blog from senior forward Adrienne Sorenson. Top Chef Champions

Every year during pre-season our team does a Top Chef competition. The players are put into teams and the goal is to see who can create the best dinner. Then we have a team dinner and everyone enjoys the food. Of course the coaches are the judges of the competition. This year Marti, Gabe, and Bre were joined by athletic trainer Gary Hogan and sports information director Hung Tsai as judges.

There were some great entries. Flank Steak stuffed with Feta was outstanding. Fiesta Chicken was amazing. But the winning team of Mel (repeat champion), Boogie, Jade, and Krista made Rosemary Pork Tenderloin with a Cherry Merlot sauce that was incredible.

Team Retreat Rewind!

Well we had a little bit of everything on our team retreat the last day and a half. First there was our lovely campsite at McConnell State Park. Great job to assistant coach Bre Vaughan for finding such a great location on the Merced River. Below you can find video and pictures from our s'mores contest, how to build a s'mores, what Briana McClain thinks of s'mores, pictures from the retreat, a video song tribute to Harry Potter, a great story about how Jessica Cordova lost her class ring in the river and FOUND IT, and much more...

Jessica Finds Cordova's Ring

The real drama of the weekend came when Jessica Cordova (Cordova) lost her ring skipping rocks. Here is the story: Cordova was out in the Merced River perfecting her rock skipping skills. She doesn't really understand the "skipping" part of the game but that's another story for another time. All of a sudden her beautiful prized class ring flew off her finger into the river. Lost forever right?

Wrong! Enter our hero Jessica Sitarz and her amazing eagle eyes. In typical goalkeeper fashion Jessica dove right into the deep river (2 feet max) and found the ring. She jumped out of the river and proclaimed "is this it?" In her hand was the class ring. It was a very happy ending.

So Close!

The Warriors played another tight contest tonight taking on the University of Pacific in Stockton.  Despite an outstanding effort the Warriors fell 1-0 to the Tigers.  UOP managed to convert a goal in the second half and turned away two breakaway opportunities as well as a left-footed blast by Gennaka Fox with 50 seconds remaining in the game.  For the second exhibition match in a row the Warrior defense was outstanding!  After a solid first half of play the Warriors came out in the second half and dominated the first 20 minutes creating numerous goal-scoring opportunities.  Stay tuned for some post-game video.

Yummy!

Saturday was mostly a day of relaxing after our game on Friday against UC Davis. We started the day with a recovery run and stretch followed by ice baths..brrrr...In the afternoon it was everyone's favorite practice..a pool workout....Finally the day ended with an amazing dinner. Freshman Krista Messer, a Turlock native, was nice enough to host our entire team at her house. The Messer family (pictured) treated us to tri-tip, chicken alfredo, mash potatoes, salad, fruit salad, beans and corn. To quote the team "yummy!"

Warriors Kickoff Exhibition Season

Wow!  You thought it was hot in Turlock these days.  Try Davis.  The Warriors did a great job today, despite the 102 temps at kickoff, battling the UC Davis Aggies.  Despite a 1-0 loss, the team showed tremendous defensive organization, and created a bunch of great goal scoring opportunities.  The Warriors played 23 players in the match. All three goalkeepers played in the match but were only required to come up with four saves total.  In the first half Jessica Sitarz stopped a breakaway by the Aggies which was their only real scoring chance in the first 45 minutes. Next up for the Warriors will be UOP on Sunday night in Stockton.  The game is scheduled to kickoff at 6 p.m.  Check back on Saturday for pictures from our post-game dinner at Woodstocks Pizza and some video from the game against the Aggies.

Warrior All Access Top 5

Scrimmage Time!

The afternoon training session lasted 75 minutes. We had a 15 minute techincal warm-up followed by a 60 minute match. It was a very good game and a lot of defending we have been working on was on display. It was followed by a refreshing pool workout at one of the Residence Hall pools. Stay tuned for the Top 5 moments from the scrimmage.

Anyone know how to operate a Heart Rate Monitor?

This was one of the toughest practices in Warrior women's soccer history. First there was about an hour of fitness. Well maybe only 45 minutes since the first 15 minutes was spent figuring out how to operate a heart rate monitor. Thanks to the leadership of Gennaka Fox and assistant coach Sally we got it all sorted out. Then it was off for a 30 minute run followed by 8 x 110 yard sprints. Then after a little recovery time we had about an hour training session on group defending for the midfielders and the forwards. The goalkeepers got a great training session in with coach Bre. After the practice we went to the team room for a chalk talk on team defending. Finally, the morning ended with Subway sandwiches delivered to the team room by asistant coach Marti. What a morning!

Melissa Phillips Named Co-Captain

Senior defender Melissa Phillips has been named team co-captain. She will join Jenna Kasch in this leadership roll. Mel is a two-time all-conference player and has been a leader for the Warriors since her sophomore year.

Day 2 Rewind!

Two more training sessions in the books! In the morning we started with our one fitness test for the day...300s...It is one of the most demanding tests. Basically you run 300 yards as fast as you can (usually around 58-64 seconds) then you rest five minutes and do it again. Then we had a morning practice and an afternoon practice. The day ended with a team dinner and watching the US Women's National Team v. New Zealand....It is nice to see the US advancing. We also spent time fast forwarding through some amazing goals in the Brazil v. Nigeria game. Wow! The team has promised we will be scoring some goals like that so make sure you come to some games this year. Stay tuned for some new video on Wednesday.

Day One Recap

The first day of the season has come and gone and what a day it was. Here is a short recap. First we started with some fitness testing. We ran the 20 yard sprint, the 40 yard sprint, and everyone's favorite the beep test. That was followed by an outstanding 11v11 scrimmage. The Warrior offense was on display as the 60 minute game ended in a 4-4 tie. In the afternoon we worked on defending.

A video interview staring team captain Jenna Kasch and senior Melissa Phillips will be posted soon.

It is time to start the season!

Players arrived today in order to get prepared for the start of practice in the morning. Here are the highlights. First it was all about trying on cleats. Wow! That was a challenge but everyone got their cleats. The team also had a great dinner at Sweet River. Freshman Krista Messer who works at Sweet River really hooked us up! Then the thing everyone was looking forward to....picking up gear. It is like Christmas morning. As is tradition assistant coaches Bre, Marti, and Sally organized all of the equipment for the players and had it ready when they arrived.

It looks like we may have a new tradition! Do you know the song The Warrior by Scandal? It is kind of a team thing. Well it was blaring in the team room when the players arrived. Captain Jenna Kasch made it clear everyone had to dance their way into the team room. It was really just an excuse for Jenna to show off her moves with fellow senior Adrienne Sorenson....Bang! Bang!

We will try to get some video of that one of these days.

Stay tuned as video, pictures and interviews from our first day of practice will be posted Monday night!
